At the start of doing this page it seemed as though it would be quite simple to list breeds used in Falconry... but as my "research" via the internet and because of photos sent it soon became much more because of breeds I had not heard of, such as; Picardy Blue Spaniel, French Spaniel, Cesky Fousek, a number of French "Braques, German Hunt Terrier [Deutscher Jagdterrier], Jack Russel Terrier etc., so this page will undergo changes as and when I hear of/receive more information on breeds being used by falconers and austringers.

There are a number of different breeds used in Falconry, from various pointers to setters, various spaniels and even poodles. Some Falconers or Austringers have used some other unusual breeds as their hunting companions like Border Collies, German Shepherds and some terrier breeds. Almost any breed of dog that is intelligent enough to learn what is expected of it and gets along with the hawk or falcon can be of assistance.

It is seen as general practice, I'm told, that in speaking of running a "Pointer" it is the English Pointer that is being referred to... a case of understanding the terminology - as used in Falconry or other hunting practices. In compiling this list I have kept to this format so the first breed of Pointer is "understood" to mean of the English breed. All other pointers are prefixed with their country of origin and are in most cases viewed as HPR breeds - Hunter, Pointer, Retriever - all purpose/versatile breeds capable of doing "all".

Each breed shown here has a link to at least one of the relevant Club/Association for that breed and web site - if I've been able to find one. Here is a link to an article from "Gundog Training Magazine" on HPR breeds. Also another site; Irish Field Sports

I am grateful to certain Falconers for the provision of photographs for some of the breeds listed below. Listed in no particular order of merit or use in Falconry. If you know of a breed not listed here and would like to see it added please contact me at the email link above.

IF ABLE TO PROVIDE INFORMATION IN A "FALCONRY" CONTEXT FOR ANY BREED PLEASE EMAIL ME
Because of the number of breeds available and used in Falconry the initial page became difficult to navigate so I have split the breeds in to three groups and linked to seperate pages. These are the "Traditional" breeds of the UK, the Continental breeds of Hunter/Pointer/Retriever [HPRs] and "Other" breeds that are used such as some of the Terriers, Border Collies, German Shepherds etc.

German Longhaired Pointer;

INFORMATION TO FOLLOW

To some the Deutsch-Drahthaar is another name for the German wire-haired pointer.  Others will argue that it is a distinct breed in its own right... http://irishfieldsports.com/hpr/deutsch.htm
